Color Guard is a great art and sport to join! It is one activity that does not require a certain gender or height. Plus, you make friends, memories, and build muscles. Being part of the Guard is a rewarding and positive experience. Here at Downers Grove South when we say Marching Mustangs, we include the Color Guard, just like we include the Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion - at least during the marching season. The Color Guard are the key to our band's visual performance by using dance, colors and other props.
What you may not know is color guard is one of the most popular
performing arts in the United States and the World. Many color guard
organizations are working to get color guard to one day be an Olympic
sport.
The color guard program focuses on the visual enhancement of music through the use of flags, rifles, sabers, and dancing. The members of the color guard travel and perform with the musicians at all marching band contests, parades, and all home football games during the fall. Being in color guard has its perks! Since the DGS color guard starts rehearsals in the late spring and summer, new members just starting high school will begin the school year already knowing many of the other members of the DGS Band and color guard. Your friendships will develop throughout the season and continue on for many years to come. You'll get to exercise, spend time in the sun, and enjoy the company of your friends, all while being involved in one of the biggest organizations at DGS. You'll get to perform for hundreds of your classmates at football games, take bus trips to other high schools for competitions, and travel for a 3-day, 2-night trip to compete in Minneapolis. You get to do all this knowing that no matter what, you have the support of older guard members to help you adjust to high school, marching band, and color guard. You'll naturally improve your time management skills, prioritization and organization skills, and obviously, your eye-hand coordination skills.
